Quality Education for Socially Excluded Children

Introduction

Asha Deep Foundation has been working in the field of Education apart from various sectors. Over the years importance of Education is being stressed by the organization to make the underprivileged population lettered to ad value to their lives and to the communities as well. The children in the areas of North East Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh are reaping rich dividends of seeds sown by Asha Deep Foundation which have enabled them to align with mainstream society. Keeping in view the role of Education in the lives of children and their families, Asha Deep Foundation has introduced a project “Quality Education for Socially Excluded Children” in partnership with “Childreach International India” for the extremely deprived children in the areas of Seemapuri Jain Mandir and Panchsheel slums. The project is to attain the level of providing quality education for under-privileged children by strengthening the functionality of schools and anganwadis in target areas.

Delineation of Interventions:

The above said project has conducted few way forward-activities to take off initially in terms of introduction, rapport building, creation of awareness, conscientization and enrolment of children in the centre and schools.

Aim of the project:

Aiming to achieve quality Education for the Socially Excluded Children, Childreach International India partners with Asha Deep Foundation to protect the rights of children by building learning process among children of age 3-14 years, focusing on strengthening existing structures of anganwadis, increasing accessibility of quality education for non school going as well as school going children, creating mass awareness on Right to Education through formation of School Management Committees and building the capacities of community, parents and children.

Main Objective:

The objective of the project is to protect the  rights  of the children by building the learning process among children of age 3-14 years in 3 slums (Seemapuri, Jain Mandir and Panchsheel)of North East Delhi and NCR specifically focusing accessibility   of quality education for 100 non-school going children of 5 years, and above by creating mass awareness on Right to Education and facilitating quality education, formation of SMC in government schools, building the capacities of community and strengthening existing structures of government (anganwadis).

Specific Objective:

To facilitate the access of quality education for non- school going children from extremely deprived communities in North East Delhi and NCR.
Strengthening of Anganwadis through empowering 25 mother groups to monitor quality service of anganwadicenters.
To generate awareness of Right To Education (RTE) and enhancement of functioning of RTE provisions

Activities of the Project:-

The major activities of the project are as follows:

Strengthening of Aganwadis
A. 25 Women (Mothers) Group Meeting In New Seemapuri and Jain Mandir.
The main purpose to form Women Groups was to create awareness among masses about Right To Education and strengthen aganwadi centre by monitoring of the centre through Women Groups.

B. To create awareness and promote capacity building among Adolescent Girls and to facilitate information to them on Right to Education.
The purpose of adolescent group formation was to strengthen them about their issues specially the Right To Education through which they strengthen aganwadi centre.
Discussion is going on an adolescents group named “Kishori Shakti” on Importance of education at Panchsheel slum (Pre School Centre, Asha Deep Foundation).
2. To Facilitate Quality Education to Non- School going Children
A. School Enrolment
(i) Formal School Education
The focus was given to 6-14 year old non-school going children for accessing quality education through enrolment in school. Children who were drop-out and not able to access formal education for any reason were of major concern of this project along with the introduction and establishment of a child-friendly learning environment in government primary schools in Ghaziabad district.
(ii) Education through Pre- School Centre:

Pre-School Centre is successfully running for 3-5 year old children at Panchsheel slum with two Shifts (morning & afternoon). The main objective of Pre- School Centre was to facilitate education to 3-5 year old children and focus on their mental and holistic development through provision of healthy environment at the centre and by participating in different kind of play-way activities.

Children engaged in segregation of rags age of 3-5 year old taking benefit through Pre-School Centre and getting quality education with great interest.
Children engaged in segregation of rags age of 3-5 year participating in a drawing competition organized by the Instructor at the centre with aiming to enhance their capabilities and to develop interest in study.
B. Mothers Group Meeting organized for their Capacity Building
The aim of formation of Mothers Group was to create awareness among them by facilitating discussion on felt need topics and to enhance their knowledge specially about the Right To Education and Importance of Education, and confidence by providing information to them.

C. Parent’s Meetings were facilitated to create awareness of Importance of Education and to enroll their children in school.
The purpose of organising Parents Meeting is to create awareness among them of Right to Education with focus to make them realise the importance of education specially for children.
Parents were participating in Parents Meeting in the Community (Panchsheel Slum), and eagerly listening to discussion.
3. Create awareness of Right To Education (RTE).

A). School Management Committee (SMC)/ Child Rights Committee (CRC)
Strengthening of School Management Committee and Child Rights Committee with the participation of parents and children.

B).Community awareness – Street Play/ Rallies
Street Play/ Rally are the tool through which awareness is created among masses and at the same time people keenly watch the steps of the Street Play while action goes on.
Community people enthusiastically enjoying a Street Play on Importance of Education performed by a Street Play Group.

Summary :-

The project “Quality Education Programme for Socially Excluded Children” is aiming to provide quality Education to Socially Excluded Children. Childreach International India partners with Asha Deep Foundation to protect the rights of children by building learning process among 3-14 year old children focusing on strengthening existing structures of anganwadis, increasing accessibility of quality education for non-school going as well as school going children, creating mass awareness on Right to Education through formation of School Management Committees and building the capacities of community, parents and children through implementation different kind of systematic activities.

Success Stories of the project :-

• Strengthening group of adolescent girls “Kishori Shakti”

At the time of starting the project the adolescent girls were not ready to interact with staff members. They all were working as rag pickers and segregators of garbage. While the community mobilise. Interact with adolescent girls they give have excuse of work and do not want to participate due to fear of their family elders.

As the adolescent girls of 12 to 18 years of age are targeted to strengthen them at the Panchsheel Slum, community mobiliser facilitate interaction with parents of adolescent girls and regular counselling to the girls and their parents. Permission were received them the parents regarding form affirm of a group. Nevertheless girls were not agree able to come for meeting due to their work as all were working from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. And then they wanted to take rest instead of participating in meetings. Regular interactions were facilitated and to regular efforts made by community members and Instructor (Pre- School Centre) the group was successfully formed and group was “Kishori Shakti”. After conducted small introducting meetings they agreed to participate in meetings. Now they take half day leave for meetings. Meeting are conducted with them on Importance of education and special focus given on personal hygiene. These girls participate in the meeting with enthusiasm and start to interact on issues discussed during the meeting. The level of awareness has increased among them.

• Strengthening group of adolescent girls “Kishori Shakti”

Mrs.Mustarabibi(picture at right) w/o Mr. Sohrab Ansari is living in
Panchsheel slum. She is an illiterate woman and living with her husband and seven children. Her husband Mr.Sohrab Ansari is working as a rag picker in Panchsheel itself and hardly earn 3000/- to 4000/- rupees per month; because of this she hardly manages the expenses of her family.

Her husband Mr.Sohrab Ansari is addicted to alcohol and beats her in front of their children. It leads to family quarrels. Mustara is an introvert woman and does not argue with her husband when he heats her. She is afraid always. Her husband does not allow her to go outside the house and to interact with anyone in the community. If she came to a meeting he would call her back.
After providing regular counselling and motivational interaction with she and she husband Mr. Sohrab Ansari. Mustara started to interact with other community women gradually. By participating in meetings Mustara started to take interest in the meetings. Now, her husband allows her to participate in the meeting for half an hour.
