Quality Early Education for the Children and Youth of Rag Pickers Community of North-East Delhi

Introduction

The project “Quality Early Education for the Children and Youth of Rag Pickers Community of North East Delhi”’ supported by Tech Mahindra Foundation will be promoting education amongst children aged 3 to 14 years in the form of Crèche’, Early Childhood Education, After School Support and Non-Formal Education. The project will also channelize the energy of the youth of the community aged 13-18 years through the medium of sports and recreation so as to stay away from substance abuse. In the first month of its implementation the project has conducted the sample survey in the two communities, started identifying venues for Gali Pre- School, identifying instructors & recruitment and identifying children for the two NFEs & 10 Gali Pre- Schools and identifying venue for the recreation center.

Aims of the Project

Aim The main aim of the project is to provide quality/early education to the children of 4-14 years of rag picker community of North East Delhi.

Objectives of the Project

Objectives Broad objective of the intervention is to ensure the basic right to education and enhance the quality of life of the community of rag picking children and Youth through
Ensure basic education care and development facilities to the rag picking children community through crèches, learning centres, Gali Schools, After School Support and Youth Recreation Centre through various child-centred innovative methods.
To generate/improve awareness amongst rag picking community about their basic right.
To promote awareness amongst the community and parents of such children on major issues related to health and hygiene, common prevalent diseases affecting them.
To identify and assess psychological problems in children and to help them to cope up with the same through counseling and networking with available resources
To start youth recreational and development centre in order to prevent them from anti- social activities and hazardous work.
Strengthening the enrolment of girl child and their continuation with education program through developing a follow-up mechanism.
Formation of at least one adolescent Girls’ group in the two communities for the easy availability of instructors.
Enhance the capacity of the adolescent girl group by providing them training on early childhood care and education.
Strengthen the linkages with other school and sensitize them about the gender disparity and importance of primary education for the community children.

Asha Creche

There are 22 Children of the ages 3-5 enrolled in Asha Crèche. The Children are given care, food and pre-school education when their parents are away for their rag picking work. Parents drop the children at 9.00 a.m. in the morning and pick them up between 1.00p.m.to 1.30p.m. Pre-school education is also conducted using play way method on the following subjects: Hindi (alphabets, poems); English (alphabets, Poems); Math counting; Drawing; Good habits and Storytelling.

Breakfast and lunch are provided free of cost to the children. Nutritious food hygienically prepared is provided to the children. Since the children are of very young age the staff also helps the children to learn good eating habits. The overall result is meeting the nutritional need of children. This support also helps indirectly to lessen the financial burden in the family.

After School Support

There are 20 children in After School Support Centre at Vikram Enclave. The Centre runs from 2.00p.m. to 4.00p.m. The support is given to children of classes VI to X studying in Government Schools. The children belong to New Seemapuri Rag Picking Community.

After School Support

There are 20 children in After School Support Centre at Vikram Enclave. The Centre runs from 2.00p.m. to 4.00p.m. The support is given to children of classes VI to X studying in Government Schools. The children belong to New Seemapuri Rag Picking Community.

Health Checkup
Monthly Health Checkup was conducted on 27/11/12, at Asha Crèche. Health Check up total 36 children including some children from NFE were conducted. The health problems identified were- Upper respiratory Infection (URI), Ear pain, Gastro-intestinal diseases (GIT), Injury.
Parents Meeting
Parents meeting were conducted at Asha Crèche on 10/11/12. A total of 20 parents of Asha Crèche children attended the meeting. Discussions were held on the issues of Dengue and Health & Hygiene.

Gali Pre School

During the month of November a total of 10 potential instructors & a volunteer for establishing 10 Gali Pre-Schools were identified and recruited. Venues at New Seemapuri for running the schools were also checked for the suitability of the purpose. Children for the schools were also identified during the period.

Youth Recreation Centre

Venue of the youth recreation centre has been finalized and around 50 youths were identified from New Seemapuri during November to be enrolled under the Youth Recreational Program.
