MAKING CHILDREN THE AGENTS OF CHANGE |
| |
| (A) Children's Club |
| When the children of Pappu Colony, a resettlement colony in UP border, did not have any place to play inspite of there being a park in the area, which was literally turned into a garbage dump for all practically purposes and had been abandoned for long, they formed into a strong group under the guidance of the Asha Deep Foundation. The children then brought out a procession to restore the park, and carried out a massive signature campaign. They also gave a memorandum to the local Councilor and the Local MLA and returned not before getting the assurance that the park will immediately be restored. The result – the land has been cleaned, the boundary wall around the park is currently being constructed, and all basic amenities are soon to be placed in the Children’s park. The reason obviously lay on the prodigious appealing power of the children. |

The concept of children organization is based on the strong assumption that children can indeed be powerful change agents. The underlying philosophy behind the success of the children club model is based on the dictum that ‘only a crying child gets the milk’ and when the children collectively raise their voices on their plight and demand for their legitimate rights, the society cannot just ignore it. ADF has established a network of children based organization in the community.
The project also aims to mobilize and organize the children to help them voice for their own rights to benefit themselves and also develop the community through the formation of children’s organizations. Till March 31, 2007, ADF has established 50 children clubs covering a total of 2025 children. |
