Barclays Shared Service-Youth Employability Programme

Introduction

Barclays-Youth Employability Programme in short Barclays-YEP is a programme for the youth who are more vulnerable and belong to economically weak families. So, Asha Deep Foundation (ADF) partnered with Barclays and started the initiative for underprivileged youth of Ghaziabad in April 2012. In the year 2013 two more centers were started in Noida and Chennai. The programme works on reducing poverty and vulnerability by facilitating young adults, aged 18-35 years from economically weak and disadvantaged communities to develop the skills required to obtain gainful employment. The project trains them in various aspects like computer knowledge, financial literacy, performance at work place, English proficiency, customer relations and how to face interviews. The duration of the course is 3 months and after completing the course, students got placements in sectors like retail, BPO and hospitality. It also provides career guidance. Through this programme many youths are getting decent jobs and supporting their families financially.

Aim of the Project

The main aim of this project is to provide economic empowerment opportunities to the underprivileged community youth by improving their employability through specific skill training.

Objectives of the Projects

To provide the vocational training based on the need assessment and market trends.
To enhance leadership skills through confidence building exercises.
To provide them placements according to their interests and skills.
To highlight their success stories to different mode of media to create motivation among the youth.

Launch of Barclays -YEP Noida Centre and YEP Curriculum

The Barclays-YEP, Noida Centre was launched on 24th May 2013. Many officials from Barclays Shared Services were present on this occasion along with Rev. H. K. Chetty, Director, ADF; Sr. Jothi Chetty, Secretary and Chief Executive, ADF were present at the event. 36 prospective YEP trainees attended the session too.

Launch of Barclays-YEP Chennai Centre

The YEP Centre Chennai is located at Manapakkam. It was launched 29th May 2013. Ms. Bandana Jha and her team from Barclays inaugurated the centre by cutting the ribbon. Sr. Jothi Chetty, Chief Executive, ADF was present. Students and staff of the centre were also present in the event.

Convocation for First Batch of Students for the Project Year 2013-2014

Barclays-YEP implemented in partnership with Asha Deep Foundation (ADF) successfully completed training its 1st batch of students for the project period 2013-2014. A total of 138 youth were trained in Chennai, Ghaziabad and Noida YEP Centres out of which, 43 youths are now placed in jobs. A convocation ceremony for the passed-out students of the Noida and Ghaziabad Centres was conducted on 23rd September 2013 at YEP Noida Centre. A total of 45 students and 8 ADF staff were present in the ceremony. Ms. Wendy Lai, Ms. Bandana and Ms.Renu Kumar from Barclays and Rev.H.K.Chetty, Director, ADF graced the function.

Ms. Wendy Lai congratulated all the students who have successfully completed the course. She wished them all the best for searching for a good job. She also wished them for a good life ahead.

Ms. Bandana Jha expressed her happiness that 43 students from the 1st batch have been placed in jobs and looked forward that the others who are keenly looking for jobs will be provided jobs very soon. She suggested inviting placement agencies. She assured the students of assistance if any support is required in terms of IT or spoken English or any other related to the course.

Ms. Renu Kumar expressed her happiness to know that all the youth present in the event have gone through the course. She wished them all the very best

Success Stories

Case Study 1

Renu is a 20 year old girl living with her family at Seemapuri, North-East Delhi. Her father is working as a housekeeping staff at Metro Mall, Shahdara, Delhi. Her mother is a housewife. They are four sisters and two of them are married. She left studies after 12th Standard and planned to work to support her family. Her younger sister is studying in class 12th. During home visits social worker contacted Renu and motivated her to join the Barclays- Youth Employability Programme. When she came for screening she was having many doubts in her mind such as how would the course change her life and whether she would be able to get a job in such a competitive environment. She joined the programme in June 2013. During the initial days she was an introvert and did not participate in group activities. With the effort of volunteers from Barclays and staff of ADF, she started participating in all activities of the training programme. During the course of time there was a drastic improvement in her personality and her confidence level increased considerably. After she completed the 3 months course she attended her first interview at Big Bazaar, EDM Mall , Anand Vihar, Delhi, with other colleagues .She was surprised that she got selected for job in the first round and was placed at Cash Deal, Food Bazaar. Now Renu is earning Rs.5000/- per month. She is now financially and emotionally empowered and feels satisfied that she is supporting her family and her sister to continue her education. Renus’s parents feel very proud of her.

Case Study 2

Girender is a 21 year old youth residing in Shahid Nagar, Ghaziabad, UP. His father works in a private firm and his mother is a house wife. They are four siblings in the family and the family was going through a difficult economic situation. Girender is the eldest of the four siblings. His parents were conscious about the education of their children. But due to weak economic condition of the family Girender left studies after XIIth in search of job and his younger siblings were studying. He joined the Barclays- YEP programme at Shahid Nagar Centre in June 2012 and completed the course successfully. Girender got job as a team member in KFC at Pacific Mall , Anand Vihar, Delhi, with a monthly salary of Rs. 7000/-. He is supporting his family financially. He also joined B.A. 1st year programme through correspondence in the academic session 2013-2014. Positive improvement in his personality was observed. He is now becoming more confident, independent and ambitious towards life. His family also feels happy for him.
