Barclays -Youth Employability Programme (YEP), Mumbai

Introduction

Asha Deep Foundation implementing the Barclays-Youth Employability (YEP) Programme in Mumbai in April 2015. Initially in 2012 it was implemented in Ghaziabad. The success of the programme led to the programme implementation in Noida, Delhi and Chennai. Presently the programme is running in Goregaon and Worli, Mumbai. The programme works on reducing poverty and vulnerability by facilitating young adults, aged 18-35 years from economically weak and disadvantaged communities to develop the skills required to obtain gainful employment. The project trains them in various aspects namely IT, Financial Literacy, Work Place Readiness, Work Place English, Customer Retail Service, Hospitality and IT Enabled Services through classroom lectures, activities and exposure visits. Mock interviews are also conducted so as to enable them to face job interviews successfully. The duration of the course is 3 months and after completing the course, students got placements in sectors like retail, BPO and hospitality. It also provides career guidance. Through this programme many youths are getting decent jobs and supporting their families financially.

Aim

The main aim of this project is to provide economic empowerment opportunities to the underprivileged community youth by improving their employability through specific skills training.

The Objectives of the Project

1 To provide the vocational training based on the need assessment and market trends.
2 To enhance leadership skills through confidence building exercises.
3 To provide them placements according to their interests and skills.
4 To highlight their success stories on different modes of media to create motivation among the youth

About Target Areas

Worli is a locality in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Worli was one of the original seven islands that constituted the city of Mumbai. It is primarily a fishing village. Goregaon is a locality of the Mumbai city, in the Mumbai Suburban district. It is a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Line. The WEP target areas in both Worli and Goregaon consist of a population belonging to low income families. And categorized as underprivileged communities. There is need for development in terms of education, health, sanitation and basic infrastructure such as water & electricity. The youths are either unemployed or engaged in economic activities in unorganized sectors and need employability skill to obtain appropriate jobs.
