Barclays - Women Empowerment Programme (WEP), Mumbai

Introduction

Women Empowerment Programme (WEP) was initiated in Mumbai in April 2015. The aim of the project is to improve vocational skills and capability among women for enabling them to stand on their own feet and care for themselves and family. The programme targets underprivileged women residing in Goregaon and Worli, Mumbai. It is a skill building programme to enable the beneficiaries to attain economic empowerment and improve their quality of life. It runs two vocational courses namely Beautician and Fashion Designing. Each course trains 40 women per training duration. The duration for both the courses is three months. After completion of the course women are given placement assistance or encouraged to be self-employed.

Aim

The aim of the project is to improve skills and capability among underprivileged women for enabling them to stand on their own feet and care for themselves and family.

The Objectives of the Project

1 To provide fashion designing and beautician course to underprivileged women so as to empower them economically and overcome poverty and inequality.
2 To provide technical capacity and building their will power and confidence to start small scale business.
3 To provide women with basic knowledge to take up job and support them to sustain themselves in the work they do.
4 To highlight their success stories on different modes of media to create motivation among other underprivileged women.

About Target Areas

Worli is a locality in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Worli was one of the original seven islands that constituted the city of Mumbai. It is primarily a fishing village. Goregaon is a locality of the Mumbai city, in the Mumbai Suburban district. It is a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Line. The WEP target areas in both Worli and Goregaon consist of a population belonging to low income families. and are categorized as underprivileged communities. There is need for development in terms of education, health, sanitation and basic infrastructure such as water & electricity. The women are unemployed and need skill to attain economic empowerment.

Status of WEP Training

After a two months long involvement in identification of target areas, field visits, survey, recruitment of instructors, preparation of the centres, community mobilization, identification of trainees, screening and enrolment, the WEP training was started in June 2015. Total of 151 underprivileged women got enrolled and are undergoing training in fashion designing and beautician course.

Status of WEP Training

The Women Empowerment Programme is expected to impact the community as follows:
1) Underprivileged women getting the opportunity for skill training
2) Motivating the community women and their families to look forward for a better future through the training
3) Women getting an opportunity to get trained in the vicinity of their community
4) Trained women getting placement assistance or getting moral support and entrepreneurship skills for self-employment and
5) Improving the economic conditions of the beneficiaries and their families
